This is a very meaningful time of year for me.  Back in the days when I was a high school teacher, the end of August signaled the conclusion of summer vacation and the start of a new school year (which could be great or not-so-great!!)  Since retiring, I find myself more focused on the approach of the High Holiday season, with the succession of both solemn services and joyous celebrations.

I am thankful that our religion gives us the opportunity for a fresh start each year.  We don't have to carry the burden of guilt for things we may have handled poorly or not at all.  As we take time to reflect during the month of Elul, we can reach out and apologize to those we may have offended in our personal or business lives, and we can ask Hashem for forgiveness for misdeeds and omissions in our spiritual lives.

And, when all is said and done, we can start the New Year with a clean slate and the opportunity to chart a more positive course moving forward.

In my synagogue life, my self-improvement plan focuses on ways to fine-tune my leadership skills and increase member involvement in all congregational activities.  Because we have a small congregation, I always worry that our small cadre of "usual" volunteers will be called upon too often and perhaps get burned out.  So I am encouraging my leadership team to spread out the workload by personally inviting those who are less involved to work on small, focused projects that do not require a long-term commitment.  Believe me, every effort is greatly appreciated.

Rather than look over this past year and regret that you weren't as involved in the synagogue as you might have been, just look ahead to 5771, find an area of interest and contribute your personal touch to shape and enhance our congregation.  There are countless opportunities for members of all ages to volunteer or participate in a range of social, spiritual and educational activities.  Answer the call!!

On behalf of the synagogue leadership and staff, I extend to you and your family wishes for a healthy, happy, prosperous and fulfilling New Year

Stephen Minsky, President
