a message from joan hersch
Before I get ready to begin a new year, I want to first reflect on this past year.
For a small school, we accomplish a great deal. Our students learn and develop an appreciation for their Jewish heritage. We work to create strong Jewish memories that the students will want to repeat with their children.
We place heavy emphasis on Hebrew reading and prayer skills that will enable our students to walk into any synagogue in the world and be part of the Jewish community for the rest of their lives. The staff works beautifully together, nurturing the best in each child. Willing, talented, knowledgeable, and caring are just a few words to describe our staff. Everyone puts hours above and beyond the terms of the contract. In teaching our children, they respond to a "higher authority" and are on a very special mission. They deserve our appreciation.
I want to offer special thanks to Ellen Weiner. Her tireless dedication to our school shows in the loving attention she gives to every aspect of the school. Under her leadership, all the members of the School Committee, Susan Medoff, Jen Wind, Diana Brandani, Jo Fradkin, Jean Ulkloss, Amy Deutsch, Liza Sherman, Wendy Nowicki, and Sherry Klapper, comprise a very hard-working committee actively invested in ensuring the quality and viability of our school. Their support and guidance keep the Rabbi Howard Hersch School highly regarded by the entire community.
Sincerest appreciation to Sharon Segarra and Jodie Spolsky They are fantastic to work with and tremendous support to me, the school and the congregation. Rounding out our staff is Steve Stinus. I am constantly amazed at what he can do and how efficiently and professionally it gets done. Thank you!
My sincerest appreciation goes to our synagogue president, Roz Zucker. She is always available to listen and to do. Shes put forth tremendous effort into helping our school flourish. Her effort is a true act of caring and commitment to our Jewish Future.
I am honored by the trust you place in me to be your partner in the Jewish education of our children. It is a responsibility I take very seriously. Together, may we continue to nurture the treasure of living Jewishly, as we teach our children.
PLEASE: Return all your registration forms as soon as possible, so we can plan for another great year of Jewish learning.
Spread the word about CBOI and our school. Encourage your friends to become part of our synagogue family.
All are welcome.
I will be working throughout the summer and encourage you to call me with any questions or concerns. Send the names of any families you know, who would like to give the gift of Jewish living to their children. I am available to talk to them and show them around. It’s really good for the soul.
Give your kids an opportunity to be thankful, and give yourselves, the pleasure of being actively involved in sharing and continuing the values, traditions, and joy of being Jewish!
Have a wonderful summer. Rabbi Bahir, Cantor Schnitzer, and I, look forward to welcoming you to Shabbat Services.
B’shalom
Joan

Mitzvah Bears
We are beginning a project called "WAY TO GO," to help encourage students to make the world a kinder place by filling the bears with kindness.
Students attend class 2 times a week. Classes meet Wednesday from 5pm until 6:30 PM and Sunday from 9:15 AM until 12:30 PM.
Our School emphasizes equally the study of Siddur Hebrew, Prayer and Liturgy, as well as Jewish ethics, history, Bible and Jewish customs and ceremonies. Jewish identity is stressed. The children study the “how and why” of our holidays and celebrate Jewish life cycle experiences. The newest and most up-to-date materials are used. A multi-media approach is offered to add to our students’ excitement of learning about being Jewish. We teach each child according to their own individual needs.
Formal Hebrew instruction begins in third grade with heavy emphasis on developing fluency in Hebrew decoding skills. From there, the student is guided in reinforcing and building their Hebrew skills with a Siddur Hebrew approach. A progressive vocabulary expands from lesson to lesson.
Our hard-earned reputation for excellence is maintained in our Prayer Program. Students master competency in the Prayer Book and Passover Hagaddah so that they can feel at home in any synagogue.
Emphasis has been placed on involving the family and home in our children’s progress and programs.
The complete curriculum is available in print, upon request.
